SURFACE DISTURBANCES

Multipurpose modular sculptures for open environments and public spaces

design

The sculpture is a two part design fabricated to be fixed together in three different methods to form three designs. These three designs can then be fixed to the ground in six different ways to create a greater design variation.

Setting

The design can be constructed in multiple ways to create a variety shapes and aesthetic outcomes to suit the environment it is placed in. This will enable it to become a more versatile design and allow it to be potentially implemented into more environments. Shown above is the sculpture set out as a low sitting wave form, this allows it to function as seating as well as a design feature

Environment

The idea of turning the design into a seat which surrounds and protects trees is a very appealing concept. This will allow people to sit under the shade of the tree with the added feature of the sculpture complimenting the tree with a modern form.
Since the design is modular and has the ability to be transported and put together as two separate components the seating can be easily placed around the base of existing trees with out harming them.

LIGHTING

The position and placement of the sculpture is critical.
The design has been outlined to work play with the suns projection creating complex and mesmerising shadows through out the entire day through all seasons.

PROTOTYPE

The prototype was conceptualized within Rhino then 3D printed for visual reference to test lighting features and shadow play as well as testing a scale environmental positioning visual.
